Students in 6th grade social studies wrapped up a unit over Europe during the Middle Ages. As part of the unit, students learned that Cathedrals had magnificent stained glass windows that rich nobles and wealthy merchants purchased in an effort to prove they were good Christians who deserved to go to Heaven.
Students were given the option of designing a stained glass window that portrayed information about themselves and their family using symbols, colors, and animals. The second option was to design a coat-of-arms shield that reflected family traits, traditions, and ancestry. Knights carried shields into battle to identify the kingdom and family they were protecting and fighting for. Thanks to the students' tremendous energy and efforts, our classroom is colorful, informative, and most fitting for a Medieval Society representation.
